She was praised for her alternative voice on the show, but eliminated contestant Eden Roberts (18) only started singing two years ago – and that was due to a potentially debilitating injury.

The Auckland music student developed repetitive strain injury (RSI) from playing the guitar when she was 16.

What felt like a disaster at the time, she says, forced her to start using her voice.

Although she says her family isn’t particularly musical, Eden – who is studying for a Bachelor of Music at The University of Auckland alongside fellow contestant Fletcher Mills

– can play the guitar, cello, harmonica and piano.

And while she’s now out of the competition, much to the displeasure of mentor Daniel Bedingfield, she loved her time on the top-rating show.

“[It] was an amazing experience. All the contestants, judges and crew were so inspiring. It was a really good journey.”
