Bride & a baby: Makere Bradnam’s wild ride!

Life is action-packed for this sporty sweetheart

A year of big changes is looming for Prime TV’s Makere Bradnam. The stunning sports host isn’t just preparing for the birth of her first child – she’s also planning her wedding to her longtime love Kurt Gibbons.

“I’ve wanted to get married for so long and now there’s an engagement, baby, wedding … It’s all happening at once!” laughs Makere, 29, who presents The Crowd Goes Wild and Sky Sport Select.

After seven years together, Makere admits she was beginning to think they would never take the next step. Luckily, Kurt’s utterly romantic proposal, during a holiday with friends to Isla Mujeres off the coast of Mexico, was more than worth the wait.

The couple’s August arrival has shifted their focus from next year’s wedding. “I’m like, ‘Let’s do it simple!’” jokes Makere.

Before dinner one night, property developer and investor Kurt took his gorgeous girlfriend for a walk along the beach, where he eventually popped the question.

“It was perfect,” smiles Makere. “I just dropped my bag full of things and started crying. I didn’t even look at the ring. When I did, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s so big!’”

The four-carat princess-cut diamond nearly didn’t make it to the couple’s holiday destination, however, after Kurt almost lost it en route to meeting the group in Mexico. The 31-year-old accidentally left the bag containing the ring on a Los Angeles shuttle bus, but thankfully, he was able to recover it safely after a frantic three-hour search.

Sweet surprise

That wasn’t the only surprise in store for the newly engaged lovebirds. Upon returning home from the holiday, a savvy Makere began to suspect her lingering nausea wasn’t just a case of traveller’s tummy bug.

A pregnancy test confirmed her suspicions, after which it was time to let an ecstatic Kurt in on the news too.

Now over halfway through her pregnancy, Makere has finally stopped having morning sickness and is more determined than ever to keep up with her healthy lifestyle, focusing on pregnancy-friendly exercises with her trainer.

And while the basic plans for the wedding have already been mapped out – the couple will marry next year in Wanaka – the finer details have either been delegated to Kurt’s mum or put on pause until after the birth.

“If I wasn’t pregnant, I would be so focused on the wedding, but I’m like, ‘You know what? Let’s do it simple because I’ve got a baby!’” laughs Makere. The proposal may have been a long time in the making, but it’s clear Makere’s priorities have now changed … and fast!
