Materials:

Tissue paper (one sheet makes two tassels)

Scissors

String or ribbon

Step 1. Take a sheet of tissue paper and fold it in half width-ways twice, in the same direction. Smooth it out, then fold in half again in the opposite direction.

Step 2. Position the paper with the open ends towards you and cut 1-2cm wide strips towards the fold to create a fringe (leaving about 5cm uncut at the fold line).

Step 3. Unfold the tissue paper until you have just two layers. Cut the strip off along the fold so you have two separate sheets.

Step 4. Take one sheet and fold it in half. Roll it up tightly, ensuring the tassels don’t get tangled.

Step 5. Twist the tassel firmly around the middle, then curl it in on itself to make a loop.

Step 6. Thread the tassels onto a piece of string or ribbon and hang them up.

Hint: To make tassels like the silver ones shown, use metallic cello wrap. Because these are a bit more difficult to handle, cut them with a craft knife and a ruler rather than scissors. If you find the tassel wants to unravel after you’ve twisted it, secure it by wrapping one of the strands around the base of the loop, knotting it firmly. Enjoy!
