Making your fireplace the focal point of your home

There’s nothing like flickering flames to really make you feel at home.
fireplaces, making a fireplace the focal point of a living area

I’m a huge fan of fireplaces being the focal point of a living area. In fact, I think houses without this particular feature somehow look naked. The mantelpiece is a place where you can concoct special displays that reflect your personality. And at the end of the day, who doesn’t love curling up on a rug with a nice drink and a good book, in front of a cosy fire?

All fired up

While some new-home builders might think of the fireplace as an outdated concept, it’s time to think again. While genuine open fires can be messy and labour intensive, there are attractive and effective electric and gas versions around these days. If your home is centrally heated, there’s nothing to stop you having a purely decorative fireplace. Bring it to life with candles in the winter or fill it with flowers in summer.

On show

Remember when choosing or remodelling a fireplace that it needs to fit with the style of your home. In these light, bright Scandinavian-style rooms, simple white fireplaces steal the show.

A subtle showcase

The fireplace below has been cleverly incorporated into a wall unit that also includes storage and display features. The TV is cleverly situated above the grate in the place where a mirror or painting might once have hung. If you think this sort of unit could fit within your existing or to-be-built home, call a good joiner in and get a quote.

Get the look

In the more traditionally styled home, an elaborate fireplace can anchor a room most effectively. When there’s lots of detail close by – for example, the leadlight windows in this living area – it pays to keep accessories to a minimum. The symmetrical aspect of two handsome vases at either end of this mantelpiece is very pleasing.

Cosy up

A blocked and decommissioned fireplace can still serve as a fabulous display space. This arrangement of greenery and candles provides an atmosphere that’s almost as comforting and cosy as an actual fire.

Play and display

Don’t be afraid to push the boat out when it comes to styling the mantle itself – don’t let your imagination be confined by the season. While swags of flowers and leaves look wonderful at Christmas time, a pared-down version can add interest at any time of the year.
