Craft: Crochet blankets

This crochet blanket, is perfect as a christening gift.

This edging has evenly spaced flowers, but if you’re out by a stitch or two, just carry on – it’ll look fabulous either way.

MATERIALS

Rooster Almerino Baby (50% baby alpaca/50% merino wool)

• 8 x 50g (1¾oz) balls – approx. 1000m (1092yd) – of 508 Surf (A)

• 1 x 50g (1¾oz) ball – approx 125m (136½yd) – each of 501 Sea Spray (B) and 515 Jellyfish (C)

• 4mm (US size G/6) crochet hook

MEASUREMENTS

91 x 71.5cm (35¾ x 28½in)

TENSION

Approx 3 shells (20 sts) x 10½ rows over a 10cm (4in) square working shell pattern using 4mm (US size G/6) hook.

Blanket

Using A, make 129ch.

ROW 1 (RS) : 3tr in third chfrom hook, miss 3 ch, 1dc in each of next 7 ch, miss 3 ch, 7tr in next ch, miss 3 ch, 1dc in each of next 7 ch; rep from to last 4 ch, miss 3 ch, 4tr in last ch.

ROW 2: 1ch, 1dc in each st, ending 1dc in top of first 3ch in previous row.

ROW 3: 1ch, 1dc in each of first 4 sts, miss 3 sts, 7tr in next st, miss 3 sts, 1dc in each of next 7 sts; rep from to last 11 sts, miss 3 sts, 7tr in next st, miss 3 sts, 1dc in each of last 4 sts.

ROW 4: 1ch, 1dc in each st to end.

ROW 5: 3ch (counts as 1tr), 3tr in first st, miss 3 sts, 1dc in each of next 7 sts, miss 3 sts, 7tr in next st, miss 3 sts, 1dc in each of next 7 sts; rep from to last 4 sts, miss 3 sts, 4tr in last st.

Rep Rows 2–5 until work measures approx. 85.5cm (33½in), ending with a Row 4. Fasten off.

Edging

With RS facing, join B with a ss in first dc at top of last row (top right-hand corner of blanket).

ROUND 1 : *1ch (does NOT count as a dc), 3dc in same dc as ss, 1dc in each of remaining dc to last dc of row, 3dc in last dc (corner), then cont around blanket, work 152dc evenly along row-end edge, 3dc in first foundation ch at bottom of blanket corner), 1dc in each of remaining foundation ch to last foundation ch (at base of first 3tr group of row), 3dc in last ch (corner), 152dc evenly along last row-end edge, join with a ss in top of first dc. (566 sts)

Break off yarn, but do not fasten off. Cont in rounds with RS always facing.

ROUND 2: Join in C, 1ch, 1dcin same dc as ss, 1dc in each of remaining dc to end, join witha ss in first dc.

ROUND 3: 1ss in next dc (corner dc), 1ch, 3dc in same dc as ss, 1dc in each dc to next corner dc, 3dc in corner dc; rep from twice, 1dc in each dc to end, join with a ss in first dc. Fasten off.

ROUND 4 (FLOWER ROUND): With RS facing, join B with a ss in centre st of 3dc corner group at top right-hand corner of blanket and work along each edge as follows. Top edge : Turn, 4ch, join with a ss in first ch to form a ring, turn (so RS is now facing again), [2ch, 3tr, 1dc] 4 times in ring (4 petals), join with a dc in dc at base of flower (1 flower made from to ), 1dc in each of next 11 sts, make flower, 1dc in each of next 9 sts, make flower; rep from 12 times more, 1dc in each dc to centre dc of 3dc corner group, 1dc in corner dc, make flower. (2 corners completed)

First side edge:

*1dc in each of next 11 sts, make flower; rep from to of top edge 15 times, 1dc in each dc to centre dc of 3dc corner group, 1dc in corner dc, make flower. (3 corners completed)

Bottom edge:

Work as for first side edge, but working from to 12 times instead of 15. (4 corners completed)

Second side edge:

Work as for first side edge, but omitting last flower, join with a ss in base of first flower of round. Fasten off.
