‘Home: New Short Stories by New Zealand Writers’ edited by Graeme Lay and Stephen Stratford

(Black Swan, $27.99)What could be better for the busy modern person than a collection of 500-word stories? Honestly, if you haven’t got time to read one of these, you need to go straight to the Time oanagement Police for a good slapping.

Nearly 1000 New Zealanders submitted short stories on the prescribed theme of “home” for this 2005 collection and here are the top 100. They’re like quick little snippets of someone else’s life, almost like dreams, and quite a joy to read. I particularly liked The oarigold Bed, The Good Woman and No Rs, Please.
