Skyfall 007

Rated M.

When is a James Bond movie not a James Bond movie? That is the question you might ask yourself after watching 007’s latest outing, Skyfall. Losing a lot of the slightly hokey wink-at the-camera Bond-isms we’ve grown to love over the past 50 years – Bond drinks Heineken these days – the film is devoid of gadgets and gimmicks and is braced for action. Daniel Craig plays a damaged Bond who comes back from the dead when M (Judi Dench)’s life is threatened by a deranged former agent (a maniacal Javier Bardem).

American Beauty director Sam Mendes has created a film that is sharp and slick – but it’s so stripped back Bond is practically wearing a singlet. Though it’s good, this is more like watching a Jason Bourne movie and it does take itself a bit too seriously.
