Kevin Milne: Confusing insurance pay-out logic

Insurance pay-out logic can be confusing to understand.

I have a question regarding electric blankets. Ours “blew”and damaged bedding and sleepwear. My insurance wouldn’t cover the electric blanket, but agreed to pay out on my duvet, woollen sleeper and pyjamas. I’m confused why they paid out on those items but not the electric blanket, given it was the electric blanket that caused the problem.

Yes, this is interesting. Insurers will pay out for damage but not for what caused it. I’ve never quite got my head around why this is so but it is standard insurance practise. Last year my house was flooded when a pipe connection inside a wall broke and poured 11,000 litres of water into the upstairs area.

The insurers dutifully paid out for all the damage, but wouldn’t pay to repair the broken pipe. So don’t be concerned that they’re putting one over you; just be pleased they’re compensating you for the loss of your other goods. However, I am concerned that you’ve had what seems like a minor fire caused by an electric blanket.

Is your electric blanket checked every year by an electrician? You should make sure you do this. If the electric blanket was less than a year old and you’ve looked after it, you should be able to take it back to where you bought it and get a full refund.
