Throughout my two years in the editor’s chair at New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, I’ve watched in amazement as magazines worldwide have proclaimed “Kate’s pregnant!” with depressing regularity. From the month following her gorgeous wedding in April 2011, editors looking for a quick sale have splashed headlines about the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy with the kind of certainty that comes from knowing no-one will hold you to that a year hence. It is a point of pride at the Weekly that our royal stories are always well-researched, and written by journalists who know the article may one day end up at the palace. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall regularly receives clippings from the Weekly. So this week’s cover story on Kate’s recent weight-gain and glowing skin claims no world exclusive. Is Kate pregnant? I claim no inside knowledge. But I do know that our favourite duchess is looking like the picture of blooming good health – and don’t we hope she is!
