Film review: This is 40
By Emma Rawson on 22nd February, in Fun & Win, Movies, Reviews
Rated R16.
As the “sort of” sequel to director Judd Apatow’s breakthrough comedies Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin, there is a certain standard This Is 40 ought to reach. While it doesn’t quite hit the same mark, This Is 40 is an amusing and refreshing story about a couple with two kids who struggle to cope with reaching a certain milestone.
Judd has a knack for creating very human dialogue and there are some golden moments in the scenes between Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann), but although realistic the scenes can feel a bit flabby and drawn out. Chris O’Dowd is hilarious as ever, and Jason Segel is a highlight as a flirtatious fitness instructor.
