Film review: Les Misérables

Rated M.
It’s hard not to gush about Les Misérables. After so many big-screen adaptations of the hit musical, finally comes one with the epic quality suitable for a tale about the French Revolution. Kicking off with a harrowing Look Down, where convict Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) hauls the galleys to shore, the film never eases up on the drama or the emotion. Many film musicals use prerecorded music with the actors lip-synching on set, but the Les Mis cast sang their songs live, adding more raw passion – particularly in Anne Hathaway’s emotional triumph, I Dreamed A Dream.
