Film review: Beautiful Creatures
Rated M.
Billed as the next teen sensation, this supernatural drama has suffered from Twilight comparisons – and there’s not even a vampire in sight. Telling the tale of a family of witches who live in a sleepy southern town and a mortal Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), who falls for one of the spellcasters, Beautiful Creatures is packed with wit and is more akin to True Blood.
Alice Englert (daughter of Kiwi director Jane Campion) stars as Lena – a witch who has to choose between using her powers for good or evil on her 16th birthday – and has great on-screen chemistry with Alden. Also starring Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson, this is not just for the teen girls – both men and women will enjoy this as a light-hearted escape.
