Argo

Much has been made in the New Zealand press about the “historical inaccuracies” in Argo involving New Zealand’s part in the Iranian hostage crisis from 1979 to 1981. Although the New Zealand embassy in Tehran did play a small role in the political incident – which is overlooked – this detail should not overshadow this well-made, insightful drama.
The film follows a group of US diplomatic workers who are escorted out of a violent uprising by a CIA of cer who is pretending to be producing a sci-fi movie. Ben Affleck gives a mature and understated performance and proves again that he is a gifted director in this canny and timely commentary on the US’ involvement in the Middle East.
