Day in the life: Ruby Frost

Between mentoring her contestants on TV3’s The X Factor NZ, writing her sophomore album and touching up her pink, candy-coloured locks, there’s not a lot of time left in Ruby Frost’s day for, well, anything.

But if she’s got her soy flat white and cellphone handy, there’s nothing the Volition singer can’t handle.

Starting from the morning rush at Auckland’s SkyCity Grand Hotel to the TV set out West, the Weekly was given a behind-the-scenes look into Ruby’s day, leading up to the reality show’s first live filming – and she even let us in on a little secret along the way.

“My hair colour was an accident,” she says with a laugh. “I was in New York and a friend of a friend did it for me. I wanted it a really soft peach colour and it came out bright pink – way brighter than it is now! I was mortified, but I grew to love it and can’t imagine it any other way!”

About Kelly Bertrand

“I started at the Weekly after a two-week internship in 2011, which was part of my journalism studies. Basically, I hung around and annoyed people long enough to land a job as a staff writer, and I’ve been here ever since. I’m lucky enough to get to write stories ranging from the Kardashians through to the Queen, but my real passion is telling the stories of New Zealand’s sporting stars. Sometimes I can’t quite believe it’s my job to hang out with All Blacks and Silver Ferns! I absolutely love working at the Weekly, and feel really privileged to be part of this 83-year-old Kiwi institution. I’m also fond of Instagram, coffee and animals dressed as humans!”
