Craft: Knitted jersey

Get knitting with this cute, short-sleeved, fair isle band sweater.

Size and measurements

YARN

Double-knitting weight wool yarn, such as Jamieson’s Double Knitting, in the following colours:

A 5 (6: 7: 8: 9) x 25g balls in
plum

B 4 (5: 6: 7: 8) x 25g balls in mustard

Pair each of size 3.5mm and 3.75mm knitting needles

Stitch holder

Tapestry needle

TENSION

25 sts and 32 rows to 10cm square worked over stocking stitch on 3.75mm needles. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain tension.

TO MAKE THE BACK

Using 3.5mm needles and A, cast on 99 (105: 111: 117: 123) sts.

Row 1 (RS): * K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 2: * P1, k1; rep from * to last st, p1.

The last two rows form the single rib (k1, p1 rib) pattern.

Continue to work in single rib as set until Back measures 5cm from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row. Change to 3.75mm needles.

Next row (RS): K to end of row.

Next row: P to end of row.

The last two rows form the stocking stitch (st st) pattern. Continue to work in st st as set until Back measures 28 (28: 28: 30: 32) cm from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.

Beginning with a k row, work in st st from chart A (see chart notes), introducing yarn B where required.

FOR 1ST AND 2ND SIZES ONLY

Continue to work in st st in B only for a further 2.5cm, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

FOR 1ST SIZE ONLY

Cast off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Cast off 2 sts at beginning of next 4 rows.

Cast off 1 st at beginning of next 2 rows. 81 (–: –: –: –) sts.

FOR 2ND SIZE ONLY

Cast off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Cast off 2 sts at beginning of next 8 rows. – (81: –: –: –) sts.

FOR 3RD SIZE ONLY

Cast off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Cast off 2 sts at beginning of next 5 rows. – (–: 83: –: –) sts.

FOR 4TH AND 5TH SIZES ONLY

Cast off 6 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Cast off 2 sts at beginning of next 10 (12) rows. – (–: –: 85: 87) sts.**

ALL SIZES

Continue to work in st st until Back measures 51.5 (52: 53: 53: 53) cm from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS

Cast off 7 (7: 8: 8: 8) sts at beginning of next 6 (6: 4: 4: 6) rows. Slip remaining 39 sts onto a stitch holder.

TO MAKE THE FRONT

Work as given for Back until **.

Continue to work in st st until Front measures 44 (44: 44: 46: 48)cm from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.

SHAPE FRONT NECK

Next row (RS): K28 (28: 29: 30: 31), turn, leave rem unworked sts on a stitch holder.

Continue to work in st st on these 28 (28: 29: 30: 31) sts only, but AT THE SAME TIME dec 1st at neck edge of next 7 alt rows. 21 (21: 22: 23: 24) sts.

Continue to work in st st without shaping until Front measures 51.5 (52: 53: 53: 53)cm from cast-on edge, ending with
a WS row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS

Cast off 7 (7: 8: 8: 8) sts at beginning of next 6 (6: 4: 4: 6) rows.

FOR 3RD AND 4TH SIZES ONLY

Cast off – (–: 6: 7: –) sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

ALL SIZES

Purl 1 row. Leave centre 25 sts on a stitch holder and rejoin yarn to unworked stitches to work left side of neck. Knit 1 row.

Work to match right side of neck, reversing all shaping.

TO MAKE THE SLEEVES (MAKE TWO)

Using 3.5mm needles and A, cast on 67 (71: 75: 79: 83) sts.

Work 1.5cm in single rib as given for Back. Change to 3.75m needles. Beginning with a k row, work in st st from chart B, introducing yarn B where required but AT THE SAME TIME inc 1st at sleeve edges where indicated. 81 (85: 89: 93: 97) sts.

SHAPE SLEEVEHEAD

Continue to work in st st in B only, cast off 4 (4: 4: 6: 6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Cast off 4 (4: 4: 2: 2) sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Row 1 (RS): * K1, skpo, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

Row 2: P to end of row.

Rep last two rows until 29 (31: 33: 35: 37) sts rem. Cast off 3 sts at beginning of next 4 rows. Cast off rem 17 (19: 21: 23: 25) sts.

TO MAKE UP

Weave in any loose yarn ends on wrong side of work. Join the shoulder seams using backstitch. Using 3.25mm circular needle and B, with RS facing and starting at left shoulder seam, pick up 31 sts down left front neck, 25 sts
from stitch holder at centre front neck, 31 sts up right front neck to right shoulder seam, 39 sts from stitch holder at centre back neck. 126 sts. Working in rounds, continue to work in single rib as given for Back for 6 rounds. Cast off loosely in rib.
