Fashion Week – Day One

Louise reviews day one of Fashion Week.

Black has always been a popular colour at Fashion Week. Cybele.

To be honest, I can’t remember a New Zealand Fashion Week where the weather’s been nice. Every year as long as I’ve been going it’s been cold, wet, and windy and today was no exception.

The good news is that this didn’t detract from the electric atmosphere inside the venue. Sure, hairstyles were windswept and frizzy, their owners having braved the elements outside, but for all that the feeling at the Viaduct Events Centre was still one of cooly suppressed anticipation. After all, we were all here to look ahead to winter next year. What’s not to be excited about?

In the crowd we noted a good deal of black.

Designs by Ruby – bold colours and prints

Traditionally a slimming colour, it’s become ubiquitous with Fashion Week and those who break the code are the ones who sparkle. A flash of orange, a fluorescent lime jacket, a red scarf, green shoes; this is what it takes to stand out. Add an animal print or a bold floral pattern and no-one will miss you!

Coop targets a younger audience

And on the catwalk? Well, Lucia’s been sending her thoughts throughout the day, but at Coop, the only show I actually made it to today, a very cool and understated vibe reigned supreme. Departing from the gloriously OTT styles and colours of their mentor, fashion doyenne Trelise Cooper, the Coop designers are much more edgy and cool, as befits a younger target audience.

We’ve got a very full “dance-card” tomorrow, so do tune in for another update, especially if you’re heading off the Fashion Week’s public events this weekend.
