Timeless beauty makeup tips

This season’s look is classic – just like a character from a Jane Austen novel.

According to MAC makeup artist Lyne Desnoyers, the hot trend right now is for a classic look. “I’m calling it Sense and Sensibility makeup,” says Lyne. It’s all about flawless skin, strong brows, bold lips, soft eyes and a flattering flush on the cheeks. It’s makeup to enhance your natural beauty, rather than to change or conceal.

Soft eyes

Take a break from the smoky eye and go for neutral lids. For more mature eyelids, Elizabeth Arden has just launched Beautiful Colour Eye Shadows that are designed to firm the skin. If you use an eyeliner, choose brown or soft purple.

Bold brows

The trend is for full, straight boyish brows. Even if you’re blessed with these naturally, you’ll need to do a little shaping and filling in. Maybelline NY makeup artist Nigel Stanislaus says a mistake lots of people make is over-plucking brows so they’re too far apart. This makes the nose seem fatter. A brow pencil is ideal for extending them inwards. Nigel also advises finishing by brushing the brows upwards, which he claims has a natural face-lift effect.

**Red lips

**On the catwalks, lots of models have been wearing only a hint of lip conditioner for natural shine. In real life most of us need a bit of colour and the classic shade is red. For daywear, try a sheer pinky red. For something a bit different when it’s party time, try a long-wearing red with a sexy shimmer.

**MY BEAUTY SECRETS

My beauty philosophy is… Always make sure you take time out for yourself. Work hard, but remember to rest just as hard.

The skincare products I can’t live without are… Dermalogica’s Agesmart Multivitamin Power Firm Eye Cream with safflower oil.

My haircare secret is… Moroccanoil and lots of it! A good treatment once a month and a pair of good old ghd straighteners.

The must-have products in my makeup bag are… Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream.

My favourite beauty treat is… Having a moisturising hair treatment and massage, followed by a decent blow-wave. Even if you’re feeling low, if your hair is looking good, you’re already halfway there!

My biggest beauty sin is… Not wearing an SPF moisturiser daily. Capital sin!

The best thing my mother taught me about beauty was… To take good care of yourself. If something’s not right, it’s your body’s way of telling you that you need to take time for you or change your habits.
