Three of the best celebrity haircuts

Start from the top with a fresh hairstyle for the new season.

Changing your hair is the fastest way to get a makeover. For inspiration, look to celebrity cuts – just be sure they suit your face shape, your hair type as well as your lifestyle.

Choppy bob – Reese Witherspoon

Suits… pretty much every face shape and is an ideal style if you have fine hair.

Maintenance… needs to be trimmed every six weeks, more often if you include a choppy, swept-aside fringe like Reese.

Tools… for a casual finish, blast-dry with your fingers, or use a medium-round brush when you blow-dry and tong in a few extra curls here and there as a finishing touch.

Star product… Matrix Biolage Blow-In Control Shape Memory Cream $30 provides hold as well as body and conditioning to hair, giving it a touchable finish.

Long, loose curls – Jessica Alba

Suits… almost everyone with below shoulder-length hair, unless it is very fine.

Maintenance… you’ll need a trim every eight weeks or so. Lightening up the ends of the hair with an ombre colour will also add texture and dimension. You don’t have to be young to pull off this length, but it is vital to keep locks in tip-top condition, shiny and polished. Long layers round the face will soften this look.

Tools… blow-dry with a large round brush, then create loose curls with wide-barrelled tongs.

Star product… Pureology Strength Cure Fabulous Lengths $43 restores shine and softness to the lengths of the hair, reducing breakage problems, plus has heat protection for styling.

Pixie cut – Robin Wright

Suits… an oval face shape. Looks great with grey hair. For a softer effect, take the hair longer at the front so it’s more of a half-bob. If you have a very square jawline, this style probably isn’t going to flatter.

Maintenance… needs to be cut every four to five weeks. Naturally curly hair will need extra product and more work to style than straighter locks.

Tools… blow-dry fringe to the side using a small round brush. Add in texture and separation with product and your fingers.

Star Product… Joico Crème Wax $25 with fibres for hold and texture, plus moisturisers for shine.
