Strengthen and protect your nails

3 Aug

It’s beauty confession time – when I’m stressed, I bite my nails. I know it’s wrong, I know it’s ruinous, but I just can’t help myself. The result is weak, sad- looking fingernails in desperate need of rescue. The key to getting them strong and healthy is to use a specialist treatment or strengthener. Once your nails are looking good, you can paint them in one of this season’s hot berry shades.

Here's some handy advice from the experts at Revitanail:

How do I know if I need to use a nail strengthener?

Strengtheners can be used by anyone, but are especially useful if nails are weak or brittle with a tendency to split and chip.

How do they work?

Revitanail’s Nail Strengthener is fortified with calcium gel to support and protect weak nails against dehydration – one of the major causes of weak, brittle nails.

Why is it important to rest your nails between strengthening programmes?

You need to avoid “over-strengthening” your nails. Nails that are too hard will shatter due to the loss of flexibility.

What causes weak nails?

They’re due to a number of factors, from age to diet to climate. The biggest culprit, however, is water. Nails absorb up to 25% of their weight in water and then contract when they dry out. It’s this process that makes them brittle. The key is to avoid harsh detergents and soapy water. It also helps if you use cuticle oil regularly and moisturise with a hand-and-nail cream.

Over the Teacups

My four-year-old grandson was at the supermarket with his mother when he exclaimed, “You’re buying something, Mummy, auntie is buying something – I want to buy something!” Mum replied, “You have to be big, have a wife, have a job, then you can buy things.” He replied, “I have a wife – Maia,” meaning his four-year-old friend. Mum said, “What about a job?” Master Four replied, “My job is having a wife!”

Water you want?

I was in the car and asking Master Three what he wanted for Christmas. He said he was going to ask Santa for a water pistol. “And Nanny,” he added, “I’m going to ask for some water for our paddling pool.” Now that could be interesting!

Bee gone

Master Three had his first bee sting recently. The incident broke his heart, but after many cuddles he came right. Later he said, “I never want to see another bee again. I don’t like bees any more, I only like flies.”

Fraud with worry

My daughter warned me that “old people are being taken for a ride,” and that I shouldn’t engage in conversation with phone sales people. To this, Master Five piped up, “Nana can’t go on that ride, she’s old.”
