Organic beauty products

Many skincare creators are taking a more organic approach. If you're looking for a natural alternative, here are some of your best options.

Dr Hauschka
Germany-based Dr Hauschka preparations have herbs and flowers at the core of its skincare products. Dr Hauschka's aim is to support the healthy functioning of the skin and to solve problems, rather than dealing with the symptoms.
The company does not advocate the use of a night cream, working on the belief that the skin expels the body's toxins and impurities and needs to be able to breathe at night. A night cream is believed to impede this process.
Best-selling product: Rose Day Cream $51. Available: Leading department stores, selected pharmacies and health stores nationwide.

Perfect Potion
Created in Australia, Perfect Potion is best described as "aromatherapy for the skin". It uses pure and natural ingredients to make skincare products that feel and smell good and carry an inexpensive price tag.
Perfect Potion contains no petrochemicals, synthetic colourings or alcohol. The company does not test on animals and there are no animal derived products (except honey and beeswax) in their products.
Best-selling product: Frankincense and Rose Moisture Cream $39.95. Available: Health 2000 stores nationwide.

Trilogy
New Zealand company, Trilogy says its name represents its founder's three main goals: purity, simplicity and vitality. The pure ingredients are simple, sustainable and effective skin-care solutions that increase skin vitality.
Trilogy uses locally grown and certified organic ingredients wherever possible and practises Fair Trade with all its ingredient and packaging suppliers.
Best-selling product: Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil $19.95. Available: Online at www.trilogyproducts.com

Living Nature
Established 18 years ago in Kerikeri, Living Nature now produces more than 200 skincare and makeup products. The company was formed to provide ethical, natural and chemical-free skincare. The products contain only pure ingredients - native New Zealand plants, honeys and clays.
Living Nature products are widely available throughout New Zealand but if you're ever in Kerikeri, you can pop in for a skin treatment at their skin and body clinic.

Over the Teacups

My four-year-old grandson was at the supermarket with his mother when he exclaimed, “You’re buying something, Mummy, auntie is buying something – I want to buy something!” Mum replied, “You have to be big, have a wife, have a job, then you can buy things.” He replied, “I have a wife – Maia,” meaning his four-year-old friend. Mum said, “What about a job?” Master Four replied, “My job is having a wife!”

Water you want?

I was in the car and asking Master Three what he wanted for Christmas. He said he was going to ask Santa for a water pistol. “And Nanny,” he added, “I’m going to ask for some water for our paddling pool.” Now that could be interesting!

Bee gone

Master Three had his first bee sting recently. The incident broke his heart, but after many cuddles he came right. Later he said, “I never want to see another bee again. I don’t like bees any more, I only like flies.”

Fraud with worry

My daughter warned me that “old people are being taken for a ride,” and that I shouldn’t engage in conversation with phone sales people. To this, Master Five piped up, “Nana can’t go on that ride, she’s old.”
