Jennifer Ward-Lealand: My beauty secrets

Actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand

Actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand (49) is performing in Silo’s Brel at Auckland Town Hall, The Edge, November 1 to 24.

My beauty philosophy is… Keep fit, have lots of change in your life as it gives you a spring in your step, make time to play and avoid too much sugar and white food. Skincare is a regime for me – I cleanse well every evening and use products at night so they have the best chance of working while I’m asleep. Because I work in the theatre I’m often wearing heavy makeup under strong lights six nights a week, so I try to look after my skin.

The skincare products I can’t live without are… Environ. Since I started using this range my skin has improved out of sight. I use Environ Intensive Hydrating Oil Capsules while I’m travelling by plane. Last time I used them on a long-haul flight I swear I looked better when I arrived than when I left!

My haircare secret is… My hairdresser, Carl Skinner. He manages to keep track of and replicate with considerable skill all my different hair colours for various characters. I might play the roles of Marlene Dietrich or Rita Angus several times a year. Both had different hair colours. It’s no surprise to Carl to get a call saying, “I need Marlene/Rita back!”

The must-have products in my makeup bag are… Mac Tinted Lipgloss and Mineralize Skin nish Powder, L’Oréal Paris Lumi Magique Foundation, Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, Environ Ionzyme C-Quence Eye Gel, Hema Quintessential Face and Neck Oil and Jurlique Rose hand cream.

My favourite beauty treat is… A facial with a face and shoulder massage. Probably the best facials I’ve had would be Environ, Margaret Hema’s Hema oil treatment (yum)

and Dermalogica.

My biggest beauty sin is… Not looking after my nails. They usually look great for any role I’m playing, but in between productions nail care falls way down the list.

The best thing my mother taught me about beauty was… How to do a beehive. She wore one every day in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I have a memory of her in front of her dressing table, with teased hair sticking out all over the place ready to be tamed, saying, “Right, I’m ready for work!” My sister, Diana, and I would fall about laughing.
