Hot tips for voluminous hair

16 Aug

Greg Murrell of Auckland's Ryder salon is New Zealand's ambassador for the KMS California range of products. The top hairdresser says hair volume is an issue for lots of women, especially as they get older. “Volume looks softer around ageing skin,” he explains. “But it’s important not to get too hung up on it – when it’s overdone, it looks dated.”  These are his top tips to add volume:

  1. Some hair is always going to look flat, especially if it's very fine and sparse. People with hair like that need to consider a style that doesn’t depend on height on top – like a bob shape that has volume through the sides. Choosing a hairstyle that is appropriate for your hair type is paramount.
  2. The key to getting more volume is to allow the hair that you have moulded around a brush or a roller to cool. This could mean that you use two brushes and allow one to cool in the hair while you are using the other. With heated rollers, allow the hair to cool fully before removing them. The transition from hot to cold is the crucial element in setting hair.
  3. Most large hair-product companies offer a specialist range of products designed for people with fine hair. KMS California has the Add Volume range. These products provide maintenance and strong styling support for people who have fine hair.
  4. Heated rollers can be great on longer length hair. Metal-barrelled round brushes are best on shorter styles. The metal barrel conducts heat really well.
  5. To add volume to next-day hair, tip your head upside down and blast your blow-dryer through it at the roots on the hot setting. While holding your head upside down, allow the hair to cool. Then tip your head up again and spray with a hairspray to fix your style.

Over the Teacups

My four-year-old grandson was at the supermarket with his mother when he exclaimed, “You’re buying something, Mummy, auntie is buying something – I want to buy something!” Mum replied, “You have to be big, have a wife, have a job, then you can buy things.” He replied, “I have a wife – Maia,” meaning his four-year-old friend. Mum said, “What about a job?” Master Four replied, “My job is having a wife!”

Water you want?

I was in the car and asking Master Three what he wanted for Christmas. He said he was going to ask Santa for a water pistol. “And Nanny,” he added, “I’m going to ask for some water for our paddling pool.” Now that could be interesting!

Bee gone

Master Three had his first bee sting recently. The incident broke his heart, but after many cuddles he came right. Later he said, “I never want to see another bee again. I don’t like bees any more, I only like flies.”

Fraud with worry

My daughter warned me that “old people are being taken for a ride,” and that I shouldn’t engage in conversation with phone sales people. To this, Master Five piped up, “Nana can’t go on that ride, she’s old.”
