Hair up-do’s made easy

The up-do is the perfect summer hair look. Whether you're at the beach, out at a garden party or stuck in a stuffy office, it's cool, stylish and simple. Best of all, the modern up-do is all about soft, slightly messy hair rather than being stiff and perfect.

What you do to your hair before you put it up will affect the end result. Allow wavy hair to dry naturally for a textured, slightly fuzzy look. If you’ve got fine hair, you should mist the roots with volumising spray before blowdrying, then tease hair slightly with a brush before twisting it up. Mr use hot rollers or tongs to really create volume.

  • Next-day hair is easier to put up than freshly washed because it holds in place more easily.

  • For a super-casual up-do, mist hair with shine spray, then pull it back with your fingers rather than a brush. Twist up and pin messily so a few stray pieces are hanging down.

  • Don’t worry if you can see the bobby pins holding the style in place. Criss-cross them if you feel your hairdo needs extra support. It’s also a good idea to keep a couple of extra pins in your bag in case you want to fix any stray tendrils of hair later.

  • For parties, dress your up-do with jewellery like an antique brooch, clip or artificial flowers (real ones will wilt).

  • If you have a long face, opt for a lower updo that sits at the nape of your neck rather than high on your head.

  • Use hairspray to help hold the style but opt for a fine-mist spray because the last thing you want is for your up-do to look

Five steps to a french twist

  1. Pull back your hair into a ponytail and hold the base of it with your left hand.

  2. Now lift the tail by the ends with your right hand so the ponytail is sticking straight up.

  3. Use both hands to twist hair so it forms a roll against your head.

  4. Insert bobby pins horizontally into the crease of the twist to secure it.

  5. Fold down the loose ends of the ponytail behind the twist, secure with bobby pins and mist with hairspray.

Five steps to a messy up-do

  1. Flip hair over and tease the roots with a large comb, then spritz with light hold hairspray.

  2. Flip hair back and smooth with fingers or a brush so the shape is right, then separate roughly into four sections.

  3. Take the piece from the back of your hair as though you’re doing a ponytail, twist up and secure with bobby pins.

  4. Take the top piece, twist lightly and secure.

  5. Now take each side and twist it up to the top, building it onto the pile and fixing in place with bobby pins.

Five steps to a low bun

  1. Apply mousse to damp hair and blow dry with a round bristle brush, then work through a little styling gel from the middle of your hair to the ends.

  2. Separate the hair around the crown of your head from the hair at the back, and pin out of the way for now.

  3. Pull back the bottom part of your hair and secure at the nape of the neck with a snag-free elastic. Then twist the hair and wrap it round the base, securing with pins.

  4. Now take the hair from the crown of your head, tease the roots in small sections, then wrap and pin them around the base of the bun.

  5. Tame flyaways with finishing cream and apply hairspray.
