Five beauty blunders that age you

Beauty Blunders

Is your make-up enhancing your features or making you look older? We sat down with Lisa Matson, L’Oréal Paris New Zealand’s make-up director, and asked her how we can fix five common age-related beauty blunders.

Q. How can I stop my eyeshadow from creasing?

A. Prepping the eye lids prior to eyeshadow application with a primer and/or concealer and a light dusting of face powder will help to even out any creasing. Favouring a long-wear eyeshadow product will also make a significant difference.

Q. How can I reduce the appearance of fine lines, especially around my eyes?

A. Use a product formulated to disguise the look of fine lines like the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Magic Blur. Also, be sure not to apply too much foundation, or cover with an under-eye concealer or powder, as they will only accentuate any fine lines.

Q. How can I stop my lipstick from bleeding?

A. Favour matte or long wear lipsticks for an easy fix. Otherwise, take the longer route by prepping lips with a light cover of foundation or concealer (paying special attention to your lip line) and a dust of powder, before shaping and shading with a lip pencil. Opt for a similar colour to your lipstick or a nude that matches your natural lip tone. Once the prep has been done, apply your lipstick, making sure you keep within your pencilled lip line.

Q. What are your top tips for reducing the appearance of under eye dark circles and bags?

A. Sleep and lots of water firstly, followed by under eye concealer. The trick is to select a light, creamy texture concealer two shades lighter than your base colour and apply it directly over your dark crescent area. A concealer with light reflecting qualities like the L’Oréal Paris Lumi Magique Highlighter Pen is a great too for disguising shadows. You could also try my trick of adding a dot of L’Oréal Paris Anti-Fatigue Nude Magique CC Cream to your concealer – apricot tones are ideal for balancing out particularly dark/blue under eye circles.

Q. I’ve noticed that powder foundation often makes my wrinkles more noticeable. What should I try instead?

A. The older you get the lighter the texture of your foundation should be. Creamy liquid foundations will be more flattering and those that can illuminate the skin subtly are even better. If you prefer to use a powder based product then opt for a mineral powder foundation.
