Red
Who should go red?
People with a peaches-andcream complexion show off red and copper shades the best.

Who should avoid it?
People with a lot of pink in their skin tone should consider red carefully, as it can enhance the pink, creating a flushed look.

The best thing about being red
It’s fun and different. Not everyone can get away with having red tones, so if you can you should embrace it!

The hottest red styles right now
Soft copper tones have been seen all over the fashion world and have also been proving very popular in the salon this summer.

The best red star style
Julia Roberts’ hair is always absolutely stunning. She has the perfect skin tone and personality to wear warm red tones.

Blonde
Who should go blonde?

Women who had blonde hair as a child have the right skin tone to go blonde as an adult. Those with fair complexions suit platinum blonde while women who have golden complexions are best suited to a softer honey blonde.

Who should avoid it?
It all comes down to the salon consultation. If you have a dark complexion and dark hair, a full consultation will determine the right shade to match your skin.

The best thing about being blonde
Blonde hair is very summery and can give you a stunning, relaxed, beach-ready look, which is very on-trend for the warmer months.

The new Balayage Copacabana Highlights Collection from L’Oréal Professionnel provides inspiration for the season. The looks showcase highlights through the mid-lengths and ends of the hair to recreate the natural effect of luminous, sun-kissed hair. Using this technique, your stylist can give you a tailor-made colour, which is also low-maintenance over summer.

The best blonde star style
Nicole Richie and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen all wear blonde balayage colours perfectly. The way their hair is styled with lots of movement highlights and emphasises their beautiful colour.

Brunette
Who should go brunette?

Brunette hair can be perfect for practically anyone. The tone just needs to be altered depending on your complexion and the look you desire.

Who should avoid it?
Similar to going blonde, it all comes down to consultation. One thing to note is that people with a peaches-and-cream complexion should keep their colour shade lighter, so as to not wash out their complexion.

The best thing about being brunette
You can create a range of different looks by varying the tone of colour, so it can be adapted to suit everyone and stay fresh throughout the seasons. It’s also a colour that generally leaves the hair looking healthy and shiny, with the right care.

The hottest brunette styles right now
The balayage technique concentrates caramel tones on the mid and end-lengths of the hair and is a great way to try something different with your brunette look. This freshens up your style and is a great way to lighten dark winter hair for summer.

The best brunette star style
Jennifer Lopez is totally rocking the balayage look right now. She has a mixture of brunette shades through her hair, which creates soft movement for an easy, sexy, summer style.

MY BEAUTY SECRETS
Bronwyn Turei (28) plays Cody in TV2 drama Go Girls.

My beauty philosophy is… If you look good, you feel good, so whatever that entails. Whether that’s wearing a full face of makeup, doing your hair, dressing up or eating something nice before you go out – it all affects how you feel. If you can laugh your way through getting ready, the endorphins will kick in and you’ll feel great. Especially if you’re laughing at yourself because you can’t fit into anything you’re trying on!

The skincare products I can’t live without are… I have a Dermalogica cleanse, tone and moisturise system, which I love. Also Dermalogica Sunscreen, Lucas’ Papaw Ointment and Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E.

My hair-care secret is… My hair is really fine. It’s also naturally ringlet-curly, but through years of straightening it’s relaxed a lot, so I have to choose if I’m going curly or straight each day. I always wash it in the morning and put Tresemmé Volumising Mousse  in the roots and hairspray in my fringe, to stop it blowing away because it’s very thin.

The must-have products in my make-up bag are… I seem to have a bottomless bag of products. Thin Lizzy Mineral Foundation and Creme Concealer, Revlon Photoready Powder, Phoenix Liquid Eyeliner and Maybelline New York Volum’ Express The Falsies Mascara. I also love Dermalogica Agesmart Multivitamin Power Firm. It’s great to put around your eyes, where any wrinkles are.

My favourite beauty treat is… Dermalogica facials or the wonderful treatments offered at Lucy & the Powder Room at the Department Store in Takapuna, Auckland.

My biggest beauty sin is… Not always wearing my sunglasses, so I end up squinting because of the sunlight!

The best thing my mother taught me about beauty was… It’s what’s on the inside that counts. And food is family, so never be afraid to fill your plate!
