Celebrity hair styles

Have you ever shown a photo of a celebrity to your hairdresser and asked them to copy the look? I remember doing it as a teenager with a picture of Princess Diana's iconic cut. So which are today's most copied celebrity hairstyles? I asked some of New Zealand's top stylists to reveal all.

Jennifer Aniston and Heidi Klum

Natasha Radonich’s two most requested celeb styles are Jennifer Aniston and Heidi Klum. “Women with long hair are always asking for Jen’s cut and colour,” she says. “It’s a perfect style for someone with a rounder face, but needs to be blow-waved to create a polished look. Hair also needs to be in top condition to get the shine she does.

“Heidi always has jagged layers around her face. Her cut is great for someone with a long face who is looking for a bit of an edge, and you can add a blunt fringe for more drama. This style works well for medium-thick to fine hair types, but stay away if you have very thick, curly hair. Keep hair hydrated if you’re going to be as blonde as Heidi.”

Carey Mulligan

Hairdresser Hamilton Brooks says his most requested look is Carey Mulligan.

“Carey’s cut works on anything from fine through to thick hair. It’s especially great for hair that kinks and flicks plus it softens round and square face shapes. Blow-dry using a medium-sized round brush to smooth, then use fingers to separate and create texture.”

The Kardashians

Grant Bettjeman says the luxe Kardashian look is a favourite with his clients for a big night out. “Their coiffured glamour suits anyone who wants to look like a goddess for the occasion. obviously, long hair is an advantage, but bobs can be waved and dressed very ‘Kardashian’ too.

“These coiffured looks aren’t designed to be produced at home though. To get Kardashian glamour you’ll need to make an appointment at a top salon. Hair extensions must be the Kardashian girl’s best friend. Reasonably priced clip-on wefts are readily available in good salons. The other ‘must have’ product would be a strong hair spray.

Drew Barrymore

Gene Cooksley of Oscar and Co picks Drew Barrymore as his most copied star. “This style is perfect for women who want to keep their length, with less structure and sexy movement. It will suit all types of face shapes but is better suited for medium to thick hair types, rather than finer hair.

Colour it balayage [hair is painted freehand rather than with foils] to get that bohemian, 1970s look. Style with a middle part or slightly to the side for a rounder face.

Alexa Chung

Rebecca Brent of Willis York says Alexa Chung’s effortless style is big with her clients. “Her slightly undone bob with its balayage colour of lightened ends is really popular right now. It’s a style that suits most people, but if you have really thick, curly hair it might be best avoided. This look can be blast-dried with your fingers for a natural finish, or round-brush dried for volume. Add curls for a playful look, or sleek it for an evening look.

Michelle Williams

Mana Dave says Michelle Williams’ short blonde crop is a hit with his clients. “It’s quite a short shape with soft edges but, unlike Halle Berry’s crop, has a slightly longer fringe that can be worn to the side. At the oscars, Michelle wore it sleek and polished, but the style also lends itself to being worn with a more casual, textured feel.

“Women lucky enough to have an oval face will be able to carry this off. If you have a square jawline or feel self-conscious about your neck, it’s probably a style you should avoid because it will highlight those areas. Also, don’t bother if your hair has a very tight wave or curl unless you’re committed to regular blow-drying and smoothing.

“If you want to channel Michelle’s oscar style, apply a 20c-piece sized amount of a protective blow dry gel to towel-dried hair.

It will give natural body and protect your hair from the dryer while you’re styling. Use your hands and direct the hair from side to side to help tame and smooth it. Through the sides, use your fingers in a ‘combing’ action to direct the hair downwards. once dry, sweep your hair to the side you’d like it to rest. Then take a small amount of creamy wax to slick and hold hair into shape.”
