Christmas table decorations

With Christmas almost here, it’s time to set the table – and there are any number of ways to approach this pleasant task. If the big day dawns bright and sunny where you are, an alfresco lunch will lift everyone’s spirits and help reduce some of the tensions that can arise when a large number of people are gathered inside.

Don’t worry if your garden isn’t full of summer blooms – stock up at your local dairy or florist on Christmas Eve and create large and dramatic arrangements for outdoor or indoor use. They’ll enhance your Christmas table and provide an atmosphere of luxury and elegance. If flowers are particularly important to you, have a florist make special festive arrangements for your table – they may even deliver them. It’s a more expensive option, but if you’re planning to get out the good silver and the best china for a sumptuous feast, you may consider it money well spent to set the scene in style.

Presentation is the essence of a well-laid table inside or out, and you needn’t feel restricted to traditional seasonal motifs and themes. Our southern hemisphere celebrations are far removed from the old-fashioned holly, snow and red robin extravaganza that’s often still depicted on our Christmas cards. Similarly, many New Zealanders opt not to serve hot turkey, roast vegetables and steaming hot puddings. Slowly but surely we’re developing a unique style of meal where traditional recipes are adapted to suit our climate.

There’s no rule that says Kiwi fare should be dished up on a table embellished with red, green and gold, so this year try pink, purple, lime or silver decorations for a more personalised statement.
