BAY OF ISLANDS
UK-based opera star Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has a secluded holiday home in the Bay of Islands at Rawhiti, near Parekura Bay. Her clifftop Kiwi hideaway is so isolated it can’t be seen from the water. The house was gifted to Kiri by family friends and the 68-year-old is sometimes seen collecting pipi in the crystal-clear water.

The Amazing Race’s Phil Keoghan has a retreat in Whitianga, and Pauanui is a popular holiday location of the rich and famous. Kimberley Crossman’s family owns a bach there, although this year the former Shorty Street star was at Rhythm and Vines in Gisborne, as was New Zealand’s Got Talent judge Jason Kerrison.
WAIHEKE ISLAND
The well-to-do “chopper in” to Waiheke Island, in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. One of New Zealand’s richest men, Graeme Hart, and former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry both own properties there. Broadcasting icon John Hawkesby owns a winery, and Sunday presenter Miriama Kamo and her partner Mike have a property featuring two yurts – Mongolian tents. Meanwhile, Sally and Jaime Ridge started off 2013 by visiting the Poderi Crisci winery.
HAWAII
While Labour leader David Shearer opted for a laid-back family holiday in an old caravan north of Whangarei, Prime Minister John Key, his wife Bronagh, their son Max and a friend were living the high life holidaying alongside the US’ rich and famous in his two-storey townhouse in Ho’olei, Hawaii which reportedly cost him a cool $3.9 million. John chose to stay away from his Omaha Beach house which is down the road from Trelise Cooper’s holiday home.
TAUPO
Dan Carter wins the award for most mobile Kiwi celebrity over the break, spending time in Auckland, Christchurch, Blenheim, the Marlborough Sounds and Lake Taupo. The All Blacks hunk, who kept up his gruelling rugby training throughout his babymoon with pregnant wife Honor, was spotted cooling off with a furry friend in the great lake before having a go at paddle-boarding. But when high winds caused the lake to get choppy, Dan was a little at sea. “3-4ft waves on Lake Taupo at the moment. Lake surf anyone??? Haha,” he tweeted.
