Prince George’s sweet day out

Prince George found his feet - and love of hills - at the polo.

His dad might have been showing off his prowess on the polo field but all little Prince George cared about was horsing around with his mum. The future king joined other members of his family, including parents Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, at a charity polo match in Gloucestershire last weekend, but wasn’t too bothered about what was happening on the field.

Instead, the 23-month-old had a great time running up and down a grass bank and playing with a toy tractor, closely watched by mum Kate. There was no sign of his little sister, six-week-old Princess Charlotte, so George got all his mother’s attention and had her running around after him, including steering him away when he got too close to the horses. He did briefly try to hit a ball with a mallet, before deciding that kicking it was a lot more fun.

Kate (33) looked slender in an outfit of skinny jeans and a Breton-style top very similar to one she wore when she took George along to his first-ever polo match a year ago. This year’s outing to the polo was a family affair. William (32) and his brother Prince Harry (30) both played in the match, while their father, Prince Charles (66), stood on the sidelines. A keen polo player, Charles retired from the sport in 2005. Also present were William’s cousins Zara and Peter Phillips, and their families. Zara’s daughter with husband Mike Tindall, Mia (17 months), toddled around with her big cousins Savannah (4) and Isla (3), the daughters of Peter and Autumn Phillips.

The day before, the family had gathered on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to watch the fly-past of RAF planes, after the Trooping the Colour parade. After months of being kept out of the public eye, George’s trips to the polo and the palace mean he has been seen quite a lot lately. His first appearance in a long time was last month, when he arrived at St Mary’s Hospital to visit his brand-new sister Charlotte. He looked a little perplexed by the hordes of gathered media, but managed to give a tentative wave.

Kate and William are still sticking to their plan to give their children as private an upbringing as possible, but will no doubt have realised that it is a good idea to get George used to crowds and photographers, since they are going to be a big part of his life.
