We are so pleased to hear that baby Ayla Collins, the daughter of former All Black Jerry Collins, has awoken from her induced coma. The sweet three-month-old was the only survivor of the car crash that took the lives of her father and mother, Alana Madill, in southern France three weeks ago.

Her mother’s sister, Nora, has released a statement about her niece’s condition, according to stuff.co.nz, saying:”Ayla is able to perform basic functions, such as being able to breathe on her own and to accept bottle feeding. We remain thankful for her progress and optimistic for her future.”

Nora is by Ayla’s bedside at Centre Hospitalier Regional Universitaire (CHRU) in Montpellier. She says the extent of Ayla’s injuries are still yet unknown. In her statement, she asked that people “continue to pray for Ayla during her recovery.”

Ayla has had surgery to relieve a fluid build-up in her brain. The operation appears to have been successful and she is recovering well.

“Both our family and the Collins family are completely committed to Ayla’s healthcare being the priority at this time. Fortunately, that care is available in France and the staff have been wonderful.”

“[We] appreciate the concern, support and love people have shown as a result of this tragedy.”
