Beyoncé the horse fly

Researchers in Australia have named a new species of fly in honour of singer and new mum Beyoncé Knowles.

The Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceal is a rare breed of horse fly and has been named after the former Destiny’s Child star by Bryan Lessard, a researcher at the Australian National Insect Collection, who called it the “all time diva of flies.”

He explained that the fly’s colour helped him pick the name; “It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honour of the performer Beyoncé as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy – the naming of species.”

Beyoncé recently gave birth to her first child, daughter Blue Ivy with rapper Jay-Z.
